We start leaving the house wearing a thick coat, our heating is turned up a notch and our warm fleece blanket is waiting for us on the couch. Guess what: winter is coming. And every year it is accompanied by cold, dry air. The result? Dry skin.
What does dry winter skin mean?
Dry winter skin can be itchy, blotchy and flaky. This is due to reduced sebum production during the winter months. Tallow consists mainly of grease and ensures that the skin retains moisture and remains supple. When the skin produces less sebum, the moisture in the skin evaporates more easily. The result: chapped cheeks, chapped lips and dry hands.
Tips for dry skin in winter
1. Avoid products with alcohol for your skin care
Watch out for body lotions and washing gels. These can make your skin even more vulnerable, which makes it more prone to irritation. Our tip: water is usually enough to clean your skin.
2. Turn down the heating
Heating draws even more moisture out of the air, which is exactly what you don't want with dry winter skin. Increase the humidity in your home by, for example, not using your dryer too often or investing in houseplants (which need water). This not only helps your skin but also makes your home look nicer. Win-win!
3. Wear a scarf
re you about to face the cold? Wear a scarf. Textiles cause less moisture to evaporate from the skin, which is a great help against dry winter skin.
4. Protect your skin from the sun
Even in winter, we recommend to wear sunglasses and sunscreen because the sun is present all year round, not just in summer.
5. Don't shower too hot
Taking an extra long shower in the winter? Don't. We love it too but unfortunately this dries out your skin immensly. Our tip: Shower for no longer than five minutes and pat your skin dry gently with a soft towel afterwards. This is not only good for your skin but also for the environment!
